trust me, it is that bad
Even for the age the OVA already has its visuals are seriously trash. Bland colors and character designs, no backgrounds, no details, many still frames and minimalistic animation, that doesnt even look good. Soundtrack, that should be atmospherically important in such a "horror" title, is borderline-non-existent and very lacking in quality. The directing, camera angles and overall shot composing coppled with the offendingly bad audiovisuals make an experience, that completely falls flat at creating any kind of atmosphere and therefore already is a failure as a "horror" title. To top even that off, the voice acting is subpar and very free of any emotion, that could convey another aspect of atmosphere, and the screams belong to the most effort-less, akin to C-horror-movies right out of trashywood.
Next up is the story: Umezu Kazuo no Noroi is split into two parts, both trying to tell a different horror story (emphasis on trying). The first half downright fails in regards of story, because it strives way too hard to achieve a plot twist. In order to craft a supposedly suspenseful plot with shocking aspects and twists, it ignores every bit of rationality and logic. To pull off a cheap plot twist, that was so bland, that it actually was unexpected, it manages to be inconsequential and idiotic only for the sake of it, creating a largely incoherent piece, whichs story can hardly be called one at all, because of its constant lack of any consistency and subtlety making it only a clusterfuck. The second half was simply bland in trying to convey one of the most common, overused and bland horror scenarios and mixed together with any lack of creativity and subtlety - the "horror" consists of nothing but offensively direct shock value without any deeper merit to create longerlasting horror or a worthwhile experience - and paired with the bad execution, it manages to be pure mind torture.
Another shoutout goes to the characters. Those are all empty and unlike other times, Im not saying this to get a point through, they are to the most literal core. We dont have one single line of a dialogue that is character-driven instead of story-driven and until the end we know nothing about neither the heroine and her friends or the "mysterious student" to the extent, that all characters are simply plot devices for the so-called horror.
Taking all that into account, Umezu Kazuo no Noroi fails horribly in every singular aspect this medium consists of and suffers from the missing intersection between these categories as well, so that the lack in one category drags another down and so forth. Therefore it cant be viewed as anything but a complete failure in every regard.
Final Verdict: GUILTY, 1/10
FeelsGood to pair this with the 500
